In contrast to common misbeliefs there is nothing weird or mysterious about the hypnotic state. It is a natural, relaxed and focused state of concentration that all of us experience every day of our lives and can be more closely likened to day-dreaming or the period just before you go to sleep. Have you ever driven or walked somewhere and suddenly realised you don't remember part of the journey? It's almost as if you are on autopilot, you know you're safe, yet your focus was elsewhere. This is a naturally occurring hypnotic state and is often cut short by external events that require your conscious awareness, like traffic lights or other potentially hazardous circumstances that bring you back to the present moment.
So here you are, already experienced in the hypnotic trance, regularly drifting in and out of trance states, without direction, as part of your daily life experience.
The difference between naturally occurring trance states and Hypnotherapy is that the Hypnotherapist utilises this trance state, activating your inner resources, productively directing you towards solving particular problems, gently releasing blocks and fears, creating a new inner belief that sets the wheels in motion to make changes in the way you think, feel and behave. This brings about positive, beneficial and long lasting change resulting in relief of symptoms and improvements in your quality of life.
During hypnosis most people simply feel deeply relaxed and it is during this state of relaxation that the critical analytical mind shuts off allowing the subconscious mind to become both accessible and susceptible to suggestions of positive, beneficial change. This is when the Hypnotherapist, using hypnotic techniques, can assist you in making positive changes, breaking habits/addictions, conquering phobias, overcoming emotional challenges, stress, enhancing sports performance, managing pain, skill enhancement and much more. This is only possible because hypnosis facilitates access to the subconscious mind in a receptive state, if it didn't, hypnosis would be nothing more than relaxation.
You may be someone who worries that while in hypnosis you will be totally under the power of the Hypnotherapist?; this is probably the biggest myth about hypnosis that there is. in reality, the only real power the Hypnothrapist has is that which you allow them in order to assist you with making positive changes. Under hypnosis you cannot be made to do anything, or accept any suggestion that violates your morals or values. During the treatment you are in full control, aware of everything around you, and remember most, if not all, that happened during the session.
Hypnosis is an amazing and wonderful tool to assist you in changing the way your mind experiences your world. The whole experience of hypnosis is uplifting and deeply relaxing and, by now, I hope you are encouraged to give it a try; the relaxation itself is worth it!

The initial consultation, which I normally allow up to two hours, includes taking a detailed history; talking about the perceived problem or reason for Hypnotherapy; an explanation of what Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy is and is not; and discussing any fears or concerns before the initial treatment.
Subsequent appointments will normally take between one and one and a half hours. The number of appointments required will depend upon many factors, including the nature of the presenting problem, degree of difficulty and the individual progress. For some issues, one session may be enough, however, the majority of problems/conditions mostly require more than one session.

Hypnotherapy is not a substitute for medical treatment. If you have a physical, emotional or mental problem you should visit your G. P. It is always wise to inform your doctor as to any complementary treatment you are contemplating as an adjunct to conventional medicine, that includes Hypnotherapy. Always continue taking prescribed medication. When you feel better you may want to reduce it, but please talk it over with your G. P. first.
